Following months of rumors, the digital pinboard company prepares to enter the commerce game.
Pinterest is transforming its digital scrapbooks into storefronts.
On Tuesday the social network announced its first foray into e-commerce, a plan to make its pinboards shoppable. Dubbed “Buyable Pins,” the new program allows vendors stick a “buy” button on items they post to the site so that users who collect those items can buy them as well. Purchases can be made via credit card or Apple Pay, with payments being handled by Stripe and Braintree.
Buyable Pins is Pinterest's latest effort to squeeze revenue from its more than 70 million users. Though the company says it does not intend to collect commission on purchases made through buyable pins, it does plan to charge advertisers to promote them.
Buyable Pins will debut on iPhone and iPad later this month along with partnerships with Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. A future release will bring them to the desktop and Android at a later date.
